Light to Brutalism

Armstrong Hall at Colorado College has a light problem; all of the building's windows are narrow slits, obscuring the site’s best resource: sunlight. This problem can be solved without touching Armstrong's iconic brutalist form by introducing a skylighted atrium in the heart of the building. The atrium, equipped with study spaces, a native cactus garden, and a stage, would become the heart of the building; a nexus for students, professors, and performers, and a warm, open-air environment during Colorado's harsh winters. Natural light from the solarium would reach the classrooms through new inward-facing windows, reducing reliance on artificial light. The atrium would represent the institution's commitment to creating spaces that comfort students, enhance learning, and promote creativity.
